Small claims limit
$6,000
Ohio's small claims divisions (of both municipal and county courts) hear claims up to $6,000, exclusive of interest and costs. A '$3,000' figure some sources still publish is the pre-2016 limit, raised by HB 387 effective Sept. 26, 2016 — do not rely on it. No written answer is required; counterclaims must be filed at least 7 days before trial, and a counterclaim over $6,000 transfers the case to the regular docket.
