Illinois: the numbers that matter

Cannabis status & possession (adult-use)

Legal 21+: 30 g flower / 5 g concentrate / 500 mg edible (residents; half for non-residents)

Verified July 23, 2026

Illinois legalized adult-use under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act (2020). Residents 21+ may possess 30 g of flower, 5 g of concentrate, or 500 mg THC in edibles (non-residents get half); there is no home grow for non-medical users. Many cannabis records were automatically expunged.

§410 ILCS 705 (Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act)

Driving — per se THC limit

5 ng/mL blood (registered-patient exception)

Verified July 23, 2026

Illinois sets a numeric per se limit of 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood (625 ILCS 5/11-501), with an exception for registered medical patients. Because THC blood levels correlate poorly with actual impairment and metabolites linger, a legal off-duty user can still be over the line days after use.
